::tap tap:: Is this thing on? [Jun. 12th, 2008|11:36 am]

Remember this comm? For those of us not going to con.txt this year, maybe we could have some kind of virtual gathering here.

Kicking things off:

To all those of you going to Escapade, safe travels and happy gathering!

To those of you who are not going (like me), I issue the following challenge: sometime in the next 3 days, post something to your LJ that you think people would like to talk about, have an actual discussion about, whether it's just "Why We Love {Character/Show/Episode/Book/Plot}" or an analysis or a metacommentary or even a "How do you explain/avoid explaining this wacky fandom thing to friends/family/co-workers?" Then, as you read your friends list, make a point of digging a couple of layers into comments.

I know, I know, we do that anyway. But there is cool discussion going on this weekend that I can be there for, so I want the next best thing, dammit, even if I'm going to be at my mother's and barely able to participate.

ETA: However folks want to handle the structure here is fine with me, but I figure this can be our all-purpose linking back post. If you post something in your LJ, just comment here with a link.

Rename this community! [Jun. 18th, 2006|10:49 am]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

The few respondents have been unanimous in liking the idea of having a standing "I can't go to Con X; bummer" community, so now I come to you to ask for a vote on our title. I've checked to be sure none of these are in use.

Poll #750635 Name this community!

What should we change the name of the community to?

And yes, I thought about "non_con", but I don't want those kinds of problems. :)

Show off your pretty pretty fics [Jun. 18th, 2006|11:17 pm]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

Since mlyn's hosting the rare fandoms pimping post, I'm hosting this one - the fic pimping post. *g*

Remember that meme going round a while ago, where you linked people to the fic you were proudest of? This is a variation on it. I want you to link us to one (or more!) of your favourite fics that you wrote, and tell us why you adore it! Does it make you laugh? Or maybe cry? Do you love your turn of phrase, the way you structured it, how the dialogue 'sounds' just like the characters? Anything goes! Just remember, this is all about pride. Whatever you do, don't apologise for your fic - this isn't about being perfect, this is all about celebrating your achievements. :)

Constructed Reality Vids [Jun. 18th, 2006|12:49 am]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

I wanted to rec a couple of my favourite vids, but I was uncertain in just which post they should go. They're definitely not slash, so they could go in the Favorite Gen or Het Vids thread. These vids, however, are examples of a type that I thought might deserve it's own thread of discussion: Constructed Reality Vids. Except I can't quite get my arms around that concept well enough to explain it to others. Is there a litmus test that will identify constructed reality vids? I don't have such a test, but I'd like one. laurashapiro suggested that I start the thread, so we all might, you know, discuss this and figure it out together. -g-

Doo-doo or Fertilizer? panel [Jun. 17th, 2006|08:45 pm]

(Note:  I am new and quite stupid.  If it is felt that this post is inappropriate, please feel free to delete it or to nudge me to do so)

cathexys got me thinking: do the best fandoms come from bad canon?  Oh I love my main Star Trek:TOS  fandom despite its papier mache sets, salt shaker chess pieces, tin-foil  bikinis, pink fuzzy glove shrieking plants, caves with finished floors and women in green body paint and red lipstick.  I love it despite the sexism, the machismo, the plotholes you could hide a new galaxy in...but could I defend it if someone were to call it cheesy?  Or just plain dreadful by 2006 standards?

Oh, I'd argue and emphasize everything that is wonderful, but I couldn't with a clear conscience deny that it is in a rather basic way "bad" TV.

And so I wonder, is there something about suboptimal canon that produces better fandoms?

Fandom flourishes best from canon heavy on the...fertilizer.

Yep.

lovely gift, and an idea for the community! [Jun. 17th, 2006|07:32 pm]

Thanks to the lovely watergal, we have 2 months of paid time. So if you guys wanna make icons and stuff, go for yourselves!

And hey, I had an idea - what if I change the name of the community to "not_at_the_con", and leave it up permanently for fans to use during a convention they're not attending? I assume that changing a community name is the same as changing a personal lj name - that it will still appear on your friendslist, just under the new name. Am I right? Anyone know?

Rare fandom Pimpage: Holmes/Watson [Jun. 17th, 2006|11:48 am]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

watergal
I'm by no means a BNF, but I do have a rare fandom that I adore to pieces and want the world to see--and create goodies in, but that's beside the point (sort of *g*). The thing that confuses me about it, is why it is considered rare. Holmes and Watson are arguably one of the best known fictional pairs around the globe. Profic for them continues to see well among many demographics. Mentioning in polite society how queer it seems that these two gentleman have been living together in close quarters since 1881 (nudge nudge wink wink) almost guarantees one a knowing and good natured laugh. Why then, is Holmes/Watson slash so rare?

crack_van accepted it as a "minor fandom". Over 100 years strong and minor?! yuletide recognized Sherlock Holmes the first year, but removed it last year due to the number of Mary Sue gen and het fics on ff.net. Holmes/Watson, sadly, is still all too rare.

MVHO ramblings, embarrassingly exuberant pimpage and a to die for illo.Collapse )

Stargate: Atlantis Drabble-a-thing... (We can name it later.) [Jun. 17th, 2006|10:23 am]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

The basic idea: Each post gets its own fandom and a drabble to start us off and then anyone may jump in any time and continue with the drabble. Doesn't matter what pairing, what rating. Go AU, go crazy, just remember to start the next drabble with the last word of the drabble you're continuing.

The master list of drabble prompts and fandoms available is here.

Rare Fandoms [Jun. 17th, 2006|01:37 am]
For the Poor Unfortunate Souls

mlyn
[mood |cheerfulcheerful]

delurker wanted to do this idea with me, so here goes.

Feeling left out from the list of fandoms in play at Con.Txt? So am I. I like some of them, but none of them are major fandoms for me right now.

So, where else do you play? Got a rare fandom you're itching to talk about?

I think there's value in pimping rare fandoms. The Fast and the Furious fandom saw a genuine renaissance a couple of years ago when a BNF, khaleesian, led a panel and showed a vid at Escapade. At the time, she was one of very few, but that quickly changed.

Why not experience the same here? If you have material to represent a fandom that could use some love and attention, share away!

Me, personallyCollapse )
